Nathan Bryan

PHD

Dr. Bryan completed his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry at the University of Texas at Austin and earned his doctoral degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in Shreveport, where he received the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research. He then undertook postdoctoral training as a Kirschstein Fellow at Boston University School of Medicine within the Whitaker Cardiovascular Institute. In 2006, after two years of fellowship, he was recruited by Nobel Laureate Ferid Murad, M.D., Ph.D., to join the faculty at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. During his time there, Dr. Bryan focused on drug discovery by screening natural product libraries for biologically active compounds. Over nine years, his work led to multiple discoveries and the issuance of more than a dozen U.S. and international patents, with several others pending globally.

Dr. Bryan was the first to identify nitrite and nitrate as essential nutrients for cardiovascular health and was the pioneer in demonstrating the endocrine role of nitric oxide through the formation of S-nitrosoglutathione and inorganic nitrite. Through his natural product drug discovery program, he developed unique compounds capable of safely and effectively generating and restoring nitric oxide in humans, a technology now supported by six published clinical trials. As a founder and inventor, Dr. Bryan commercialized this technology through Human, to the Power of N, Inc. With nearly two decades of experience in nitric oxide research, his groundbreaking contributions have reshaped the development of bioactive natural products for disease prevention and treatment. He has authored numerous influential publications, edited five books, and is recognized internationally as a leader in molecular medicine and nitric oxide biochemistry.
