Bruce Bunnell, Ph.D., is Professor and Chair of the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Genetics at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth, TX. Prior to this role, he served as Director of the Tulane Center for Stem Cell Research and Regenerative Medicine and was a Professor in the Department of Pharmacology at the Tulane University School of Medicine.
Dr. Bunnell earned his Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine. He completed postdoctoral research at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at the University of Michigan School of Medicine and at the National Human Genome Research Institute at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. Before joining Tulane in 2002, he held a faculty position at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Research Institute, affiliated with the Ohio State University School of Medicine.
His research centers on the basic and translational science of adult stem cells derived from adipose tissue, with a particular focus on the interaction between mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and the immune system. His work explores the potent anti-inflammatory properties of MSCs in vivo and investigates their role in subcutaneous adipose tissue disorders such as lipedema.
Dr. Bunnell is an active member of the scientific community and serves on the editorial boards of several prominent journals, including Stem Cells, BMC Genomics, and Regenerative Medicine.
